Many hunters will wait until they’ve done an exhaustive grid search with 5 of their buddies and perhaps brought their neighbor’s Golden Doodle out to give it a try as well. This is a sure fire way to spread scent all over the area from your boots and clothes causing the dog to have to track down multiple dead in paths in search of the original track.
It’s best to use your best judgement based off of shot placement, deer reaction, and the initial sign to determine early if this track might need a dog. Calling a proven tracking team to talk it over is never a bad idea.
If you think that your deer might require a dog, please call us and tell us about the shot angle, weapon used, reaction, sign, age of the track, etc. and let us help you determine the appropriate wait time and next steps.
Mudpie is a Louisiana Catahoula that was professionally trained to take tracks more than 24 hours old and great than a thousand yards. Sometimes I make mistakes as the handler, but the dog rarely does. It’s amazing to watch him work and you’ll enjoy the process of tracking as much as the hunt itself.
